Wellington's new dingo puppy could soon go by the moniker Johnny Key if one Trade Me member wins an auction to name him.

Wellington Zoo is auctioning the naming rights for the 10-week-old dingo on Trade Me, and the winner will also get the chance to meet him.

"Place your bid today and make sure the undisputed cutest dingo puppy in all New Zealand carries your favourite name - the more Aussie the better in our humble opinion," the zoo says in its auction description.

"Wellington Zoo reserves the right to disallow any offensive or completely inappropriate names."

The auction opened about midday and 26 bids had been made by 6pm, with the price reaching $410.

It looks set to go higher, with "tone61" asking the question: "Could I call it Johnny Key for $500, and can we pat him?"

The zoo wished him luck.

The auction closes on August 29, at 10pm.
