There are free diamonds up for grabs on the streets of Wellington this weekend, with no gimmick and no small print.

A Wellington man whose marriage proposal was spurned will be hiding the $5,000 engagement ring he bought somewhere in the central city and posting the clues on Twitter.

Anthony, who has asked not to show his face, bought the eye-catching sparkler in Hong Kong and proposed to a woman he was dating.

But it turned out he wasn't her only love interest and she turned him down.

So now Anthony's decided to ensure the ring goes to a deserving owner, and the most fun way of doing that he says, is to hold an expensive treasure hunt by hiding it in central Wellington.

But there will be a technological twist, he'll be lurking nearby twittering clues.

Anthony's had 700 twittered responses about Saturday's treasure hunt so far.

And like the lucky new owner of the ring, Anthony will also be celebrating.

There is nothing free in this world especially where true love gets involved! What dog days for this Romeo as he gets ditched by the woman he wants to spend his life with. But he is a twit going on twitter more suitable for baking tips! If he really loves her he should wait to change her mind; Yes I know as the Princess of Hearrs said Three can be very crowrded in relationships but 3 or 4 people can come to some understanding; and these days most attractive women have at least a lover, and an experienced wife could improve your love life!
This sad guy should stop being gutted there and go out and win his true love back! Give her a mobile ring and perservere even if he finds her otherwise engaged! Remember Miss Robinson in The Graduate who heard the sound of silence. True love birds twitter songs to mate for life and nice girls always should get a proper second chance! Good luck mate! Gromit2
