Three days after a yachtsman fell into Lake Wanaka, searchers still have not been able to find his body.

Trevor Lloyd Hawke, 70, fell when the yacht he was on lurched suddenly in Roys Bay on Thursday. Attempts to haul him back on board were unsuccessful.

The Police Dive Squad continued to search on Sunday in unpleasant weather conditions, Wanaka Police acting search and rescue coordinator Mike Johnston says.

Divers have identified an area of the lake bottom where they think the body is, based on what they were told by a crew member who was on the boat, he says.

"We believe once he was in the water he would have gone to the bottom pretty much at that point."

They are taking sonar images of the lake bottom, which involves dropping a sonar unit down to the floor, he says.

Mr Hawke was a well-known figure in yachting circles.
