New Zealand driver Scott Dixon finished 13th at the Grand Prix of Sonoma on Monday (NZt) to drift from contention in the IndyCar title race.
Dixon began fifth on the grid in California after a messy qualifying session and ran off the track early on. He also incurred a penalty for running over pit equipment.
Ryan Briscoe won the race but it was the second placing of Australian Will Power that is most significant.
The consistent Power shapes as a likely title winner with just two grands prix remaining.
He leads the standings on 422 points, followed by American Ryan Hunter-Reay on 386, Brazilian Helio Castroneves on 381 and Dixon on 368.
