Federer had reason to hide underneath his cap after a loss to Djokovic

The top two players in the world Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will meet in the final of the US Open.

Nadal had little trouble against Andy Murray, while top seed Djokovic ended Roger Federer's tournament with a five set semi final thriller for the second year in a row.

The five times US Open champion letting two winning chances slip to Djokovic in a near identical result to last year's semi final.

The world number three started strongly, taking the opening two sets.

But as Federer slowed, Djokovic came to life.

The top seed powered through the next two sets, and while Federer's game returned in the fifth, Djokovic stepped up by saving two match points in emphatic style.

The Serb breaking back twice to complete the comeback victory.

The loss sees Federer end the Grand Slam season without a trophy for the first time since 2002, while Djokovic moves on to play for his third of the year.

He will face Rafael Nadal in Tuesday’s final, after the Spaniard ended Andy Murray’s quest for a maiden Grand Slam title.

The Scot became the first player to take a set off Nadal at the tournament, but it wasn't enough to stop the defending champ's charge into the final.

In the women's semi finals, Serena Williams looked more troubled by a foot injury than opponent Caroline Wozniacki.

The three time winner in New York, brushing aside the top seed 6-2, 6-4.

Williams will play Samantha Stosur in tomorrow's final after the Australian defeated Angelique Kerber in three sets.
