A dog’s persistent barking alerted its owners to a man who had been stuck in the mud for nearly nine hours in an East Auckland estuary yesterday.
The man had been fishing from a cliff behind homes in Kings Road, Tamaki Estuary when he slipped and became trapped.
The dog heard his calls for help and raised the alarm around 7pm, prompting a muddy rescue and saving the fisherman from a miserable night in the mud.
One policeman went in at first to try to get him out, but required the assistance of two other officers.
The fisherman was taken by ambulance to Auckland Hospital with moderate injuries.
