A woman who was attacked by a dog in Gisborne has welcomed news of its destruction today.

The 39-year-old was hospitalised for a week following the attack in Parau Stree on January 30.

She suffered wounds to her face, neck and arm, requiring surgery and facing seven days in Gisborne Hospital.

The great dane/bull mastiff cross, understood to be two-years-old, was put down this morning according to the Gisborne District Council.

Council environment and planning manager, Hans van Kregten, said no further action would be taken against the owners.

The attack comes amid calls for stricter dog control laws, and is the third attack in a week.

A five-year-old girl was mauled by a neighbour’s two bulldog-pitbull cross dogs in Taneatua, near Whakatane, suffering serious facial injuries.

A three-year-old girl was attacked by a pitbull in Wairoa, Hawkes Bay, and almost lost an eye.

On February 5, a Tauranga man was mauled by two of his own dogs at his Hairini home. He received serious injuries to his head and arms. The dogs were shot dead by police after ambulance officers found the man.

V what an ignorant comment, that would be every dog in NZ they all display their teeth at some stage. yeh why are the responsible owners getting punished. its the irresponsible owners who should be heavily penalised, they could own any breed and it would turn out vicious !

The Media will have a bone to chew on now..... Politicians will swarm to your HYPE just to get more press time... The only ones that stand to LOSE are the innocent dogs and the responsible dog owners. Congratulations
