The ACT Party has all its eggs in one basket, Epsom, and its future relies on its Epsom candidate, John Banks, being elected.
But party leader Don Brash made a spontaneous announcement at the weekend saying he wants to investigate the feasibility of decriminalising the use of marijuana.
And this announcement went against the personal and passionate belief of Mr Banks who is vehemently against the plan and wasn’t even informed of the announcement.
Political reporter Patrick Gower spoke to Dr Brash about his announcement and about Mr Banks’ reaction to it.
Dr Brash says Mr Banks is “entitled to that view”.
“Well he doesn’t support that idea, he’s told me that and he’s been a long time opponent of that.
“I have a lot of respect for John Banks, he was a police minister for a number of years and I think we need a serious conversation about this issue,” he says.
“John Banks and I have a very good relationship and I have a huge amount of respect for him.
“Anyone could take me out as leader of the ACT Party…but politics is politics,” Dr Brash says.
