An expert on Tasers says the stun guns aren't suitable for taking down armed gunmen.

It comes after two cases in a week where police Tasers proved ineffective.

This can be because the barbs which conduct electricity get stuck or the target is wearing bulky clothing.

Julian Bondy from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology doesn't recommend taking a Taser to a gun fight.

“If there is an armed offender I believe that you wouldn’t want to take a taser in that situation,” he says.

“I think at that point, if someone is armed, you bring in your specialist squads as soon as you can.”

Professor Bondy says the maximum effective range of the Tasers is six metres, and the effective deployment of them can be problematic in high pressure situations.
