Megaupload co-founder Kim Dotcom will be behind bars for at least another two days after a judge reserved his bail decision this afternoon.
Four men, including Dotcom, also known as Kim Schmitz, appeared in the North Shore District Court. They are alleged to be part of a group called the "Mega Conspiracy'', accused of allowing their users to illegally reproduce and distribute movies, music and other material.
The Crown labelled him an extreme flight risk, and late this afternoon a judge clipped Dotcom's wings for at least another two days.
In a bail argument that lasted nearly all day, the Crown said the Megaupload co-founder owned illegal modified firearms, despite not having a licence.
The defence argued they were never used, and only contained rubber bullets.
The Crown warned he still had access to resources - in 2010 alone his earnings totalled $42 million – and that some funds are restricted, but unlikely to represent all banks accounts owned by him.
The defence said all his accounts had been frozen.
The Crown said he has multiple identities, maintaining bank accounts and travel documents in aliases. The defence argued there was "nothing sinister" in that.
The Crown said Dotcom could do business while on bail, but the defence said his business had been shut down.
The Crown said dotcom had access to private jets and helicopters, but the defence replied there isn't a helicopter here capable of getting him out of the country.
The court also heard a police officer visited the $30 million property Dotcom leased the day before he was arrested, offering "help'' for his security.
The defence alleges a "pen cam" was used to video the property.
On the day he was arrested, armed offenders squad members dropped out of a hovering helicopter just before 7am, despite a helicopter pad just 100m away.
They found Dotcom in a panic room with his shotgun. The defence argues he was "anxious and frightened" and was not sure of what was going on.
What he knows now is he will remain behind bars until at least Wednesday morning.
