Police are investigating the death of a woman in Rotorua after the discovery of a body early this morning.

Melani Mare, a mother in her mid-30s, was found dead in her Fordlands home.

Locals spoke highly of the woman, who was a school teacher and netball coach at nearby Sunset Primary School.

School principal Niels Rasmussen told 3 News it has been a heartbreaking day for the school, as a 14-year-old former student was one of four people killed over the weekend in a devastating head-on crash in Gisborne.

Police have cordoned off the property on Wrigley Rd while investigations take place.

Police will know more about how the teacher died after a post mortem tomorrow.
