Dr Demento

Dr Demento

By Dan Satherley

Legendary broadcaster Dr Demento – the wacky radio host who introduced the world to Weird Al Yankovic – has announced his long-running radio show is no more.

The Dr Demento Show began in 1970 as an outlet for music too silly and strange for regular radio.

In the mid-to-late 1970s, a young Weird Al began sending home-recorded tapes to Dr Demento, who'd play them on his show. In the early 1980s, the exposure helped Weird Al bring parodies like 'My Bologna', 'I Love Rocky Road'  and 'Another One Rides the Bus' to a US-wide audience.

Other songs made famous by the show include Barnes and Barnes' 'Fish Heads' and Christmas classic 'Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer'.

Dr Demento – real name Barret Hansen – will continue to broadcast, but only through his website.

The list of good things brought to us by Dr. D is too long to list. Sad news for geekdom. Still, hope the direct model works well for him!

My favorite was the Star Trekkin song.

I will continue to visit the good Doctor in the Web. We still need alternative avenues of entertainment outside of mainstream.

And so, to my cat Mittens, I leave my entire, vast... boot to the head.

FINALLY. I mean, all the stations around here that I was ever able to catch it on...either played it so late at night or way too early in the morning (SUNDAY??) for those of us fans to LISTEN to.

Fear not folks, the show continues, just not on the radio, which has not been kind to the good Doctor in the past few years with all of the corporate multi-ownership and fractious niche formatting ("The Hits of The 80s, A Few Weeks in 1994, That Saturday We Had The Barbecue Back in August, AND Today! Except Those That Our Consultants Tell Us Nobody Remembers!"). He continues to produce a weekly show, which for less than a freakin' latte you can stream from www.drdemento.com! He also has options to purchase streaming of multiple shows for discounted rates, but he is decidedly moving to a direct-delivery method, and the price of the stream benefits him directly and not a lasagna of middlemen - Tell your friends, especially those who may have listened to the Doctor in years past but are now wondering "Hey, whatever happened to...."

The Cockroach that Ate Cincinnati, Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout, Hello Muddah Hello Faddah... classics that will live on forever. Thank you for doing your show all these years Doc, and I'll be listening on your website!

Read the story again, his show continues, but only on his web site. Syndicated comedy radio is a really tough market to be in. Phil Hendrie's show went off the air even after he added in knee-jerk commentary to try to save the show by getting it onto right wing radio. Most radio today is computer-programmed music.
