For 20 years the National Youth Drama School has finding out whether young New Zealanders have got what it takes for a future in the spotlight.

The school started when few others offered drama, and now they say many kids are much more focused.

"That's the astonishing thing about that first one, we expected 80 to a 100 people that first year and 160 turned up from all sort of little Hamlets around," the schools founder, Ken Key says.

The secret to the school's longevity is the tutors drawn from the industry, who in the past have included Bruno Lawrence, Michael Hurst and Jennifer Ward Lealand.
