A Paeroa man has died more than a week after the car he was driving was hit by a train on a level crossing on the outskirts of Morrinsville.

Turua Teremoana, 76, had been in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital since the crash at the intersection of State Highway 26 and Piako Road on the evening of July 1. He died about 3am on Monday.

Waikato road policing manager Inspector Leo Tooman says crash investigators are still looking into the crash but driver inattention was a probable cause.

Meanwhile, two people are in a critical condition after a crash outside Cambridge on Monday. Five others were also hurt.
