A train driver who was driving a train that struck and killed a man in a Wellington northern suburb has taken time off work and is being offered counselling.

Police investigations are under way into the death of a 47-year-old man killed about 4.50pm yesterday between Linden train station and Collins Ave, Linden, about 18km north of downtown Wellington.

The Linden man was struck by a southbound commuter train and the death was witnessed by a number of train passengers and people waiting at the station.

The police victim support unit were counselling a number of people following the incident.

Porirua police Senior Sergeant Derek Chapman told NZ Newswire the death is not suspicious and is being referred to the coroner.

A spokesperson for Kiwi Rail says the train driver has taken time off work but could not say when, if at all, the driver would return to his job.

Support, including counselling, has been offered to the man.

Does anyone know this poor man's name? My husband thinks it might be a friend of his.

The most terrible thing a train driver can face - there's nothing at all he could have done to prevent this from happening - and it does all too often. To all involved in this terrible incident, including those who were just witnesses - my sympathies.
