The Government is already planning to drug test people on the jobseeker benefit. What it's not planning to do is drug test all beneficiaries – but try telling that to Deputy Prime Minister Bill English.

“... Which makes you wonder whether we should have a drugs test for putting people on benefits,” he said today at a Federated Farmers AGM, to cheers from the audience.

The idea was obviously a popular one at the meeting, but it’s not so popular in Parliament.

“I don't support, as a sort of point of principal, a mandatory approach,” says United Future leader Peter Dunne.

“On all benefits – don't be ridiculous,” says ACT leader John Banks.

Mr Dunne and Mr Banks are both politicians on the Government's side. On the Opposition benches they say, why stop with beneficiaries?

“Might be a good idea to test some of these MPs when they come to the house as well,” says Mana leader Hone Harawira.

“Working for Families, superannuation – beneficiaries should not be singled out,” says Maori party co-leader Metiria Turei.

“The National Government does tend to lend itself towards stigmatising beneficiaries,” says Labour MP Jacinda Ardern.

But NZ First MP Brendan Horan says he would support drug testing beneficiaries during work hours.

“Well shouldn't they be out looking for work?” he says.

And from July next year people on the dole will be tested.

“Companies insist drug free - we do too,” says Social Development Minister Paula Bennet.

But the minister says there are absolutely no plans to extend the testing.

The purpose of the dole is not to bankroll a bad or illegal habit, and would it not be misappropriation of government funds for this to occur? The dole is not earned nor is the DPB, therefore it is the benefactor who should call the shots. I get alcohol tested every morning and am subject to random drug testing as per Au Mining Policy and I accept this as a condition of employment. As for people with kids accept that having them is a choice, a choice to have them or a choice to be irreponsible either way its a choice, so why should I pay for someone else's mistake or selfishness?

Drug testing is personally invasive, it's disgusting to treat ordinary human beings like prison inmates. Bennet got where she is from people like me paying taxes in our low income jobs, and now that I need a bit of help, she slams us. It's quite frankly quite sickening. I hope the greens have a bit of power in them to try and stop her in her with the drug testing.

This will be a great tool to sort those who are competent for employment and those who are just using the dole to get stoned and waste taxpayer’s money.

A police report made a few months ago about a particular West Auckland cud-de-sac fully fenced house being frequented by a lot of cars was a waste of time. Up to now, no action was taken...and all concerned neighbours are wondering what else can they do?

As long as National party members all get tested every month, at random, between now and then!! Key slurs often enough, you'd think he was half drunk or high on something.

@ Katrina. "What human rights do people have when their new fellow employee turns up to work with impaired ability due to drugs putting everyone else at risk?" Have a think about this statement Katrina. The legal status of drugs has nothing to do with what effect the drug has on people. You make the assumption that a person who tests positive for an illicit drug is going to be a danger to anyone around them. This is absurd and falls to pieces under any analysis. Should we also test for caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, zoloft, ritalin, valium, serapax, cymbalta etc, the list goes on? These are all legal drugs which effect a persons state of mind. This policy is about oppression of people and keeping the enormous profit margins of pharmaceutical, alcohol and oil companies chugging along. It is ignorant statements like yours which allow them to get away with it. Please think about this. Don't allow the 'anti drug propaganda machine' of the corporations do your thinking for you.

@Thinker New Zealand has a strong homeless population, this was brought about by Nationals welfare attacks in the 1990's. Its just illegal for them to be in the inner city... try a piece of bush close by or under a bridge... there are more of them now than there have ever been and withholding benefit money will just increase the size of our homeless groups. As we have seen though... when they are forced onto the streets their drug addictions just become far worse and pronounced and lead to increased crime.

I think you'll find once again, this policy is already in place and therefore, once again the National party is trying to make out they are doing something new, when they already do drug test beneficiaries. On the issue of drugs in our society, if you allow alcohol it is completely unjustified to then prohibit other drugs. Any arguement against alcohol not being in the same category is non-sensical. The science, the studies are clear. One standard for all, beneficiaries, workers, teachers, doctors, politicians etc..... we all benefit in one way or another from the tax system...Also are you beneficiary bashers out there aware that a large proportion of our population receives family assistance and accomodation supplements to feed their families - these are administered through IRD and WINZ. If you earn the average income of 60K and have a couple of kids, hard working or not, you are a beneficiary in this country. Why don't you attack these people too? Or what about the wealthy who received tax cuts?
