Dramatic footage captured by a camera crew out filming with police showed a car weaving and crashing across barricades into oncoming traffic lanes in China's Shandong Province.
According to Chinese broadcaster CCTV, the driver of the crashed car was drunk after a night out drinking with friends and family during the Chinese New Year holidays.
The car was soon found a few blocks away - with the suspected drunk driver asleep inside his damaged vehicle.
The unconscious driver smelled of alcohol and did not wake up when officials first attempted to get him out of the car.
"Now the trouble is he is still sleeping, he has been sleeping for a while," a local policeman said.
The driver did not seem to be injured, still traffic control police officers took him to a hospital to make sure he was uninjured.
Road accidents are common in China because of overloaded and unsafe vehicles, poor road conditions and bad driving habits.
Last year, China launched a two-month crackdown on drunk driving due to an increase in the number of road accidents and pedestrian deaths.
