Two floors of a central Dunedin hotel were badly damaged following a large fire on Monday night.

Large flames and smoke could be seen coming out of the windows of the Kingsgate Hotel on Smith Street from about 8.45pm on Monday.

Firefighters from seven appliances battled the blaze until it was put out about 10.20pm.

All of the occupants of the hotel had been evacuated and no injuries had been reported.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

A Fire Service spokesman said the third and fourth floors of the hotel had been badly damaged by heat and smoke.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way, although it is not being treated as suspicious.
