Dunedin is experiencing two major school mergers

The closure and merger of Christchurch schools has caused upset, anger and dismay in many of the communities affected.

But there's another community 350km away that has been through all of this already.

Dunedin is experiencing two major school mergers. One of them is finished. The second is in the throes of a painful birth.

Surely, we're taking into account the successes and failures in Dunedin as we redraw Christchurch's school map?

This is idiotic. Merging in some suburbs are so stupid it doesn't need mention. Do they really think they can seperate high school students from primary school ones? Have they forgotten siblings or do they really think brothers will ignore each other when they're at the same school? Never mind the fact that some things that happen at high schools are very inappropriate for primary school students and there's no way to effectively maintain that needed seperation. Oh, thats right I forgot: The goverment wants charter schools in christchurch.

From the experience in Dunedin it was quite clear the the Ministry of Education did not care what the community wanted. They closed successful schools for no good purpose. They will the same in Chch.
