Ali Ikram tests out the indestructible food bin

National Field Days is on this week as Mystery Creek Showcase the very best of rural New Zealand.

Ali Ikram went along to see if the Number Eight Wire mentality is still alive and well.

Cue Ali….

“Farming is the backbone of the economy but it is the colon as well.

“Guess how much crap a cow defecates in one day – 25 kilos in all. That’s 9 tonnes of dung per cow per year – an awful lot of dung to deal with.

“In the innovations tent pest controller Gary Samuels was showing the world his answer to the country’s possum problems – the bait station. Or was it just a piece of cardboard?

“But the bait station faced stiff competition from Magnum Industries’ indestructible feed bin.

Apparently horses are unable to destroy it – I will have to try myself.

“Back at the AgResearch tent they didn’t just have dung on their minds. It seems cows get through 20 litres of urine a day – on top of the dung.

“As I contemplated the more than 46 Olympic swimming pools our cows filled each day, I began to fear Gary’s possum trap was so simple he might have his ingenious idea stolen by a passerby.

“Gary’s bait station will shelter your bait from the rain and can be bought for five cents each.

“And if you are wondering whether the indestructible bin made it – its reputation remains intact.”
