United Future leader Peter Dunne does not want Kiwibank, Radio New Zealand or the country's water sold

United Future leader Peter Dunne does not want Kiwibank, Radio New Zealand or the country's water sold

United Future leader Peter Dunne has ruled out supporting any Government move to sell or partially sell Kiwibank, Radio New Zealand or the national water supply.

The one-man-party announced the policy at the Auckland Rotary Club this afternoon.

Mr Dunne says New Zealanders are “not definitively pro-asset sales” and says his party has started with three “no-go areas” which are Kiwibank, Radio New Zealand and fresh water.

“Kiwibank is in every sense now a national institution, whether you bank with it or not. And in a market full of Australian-owned banks, and an increasingly fraught and troubled globe, it is both a symbolic and practical statement of our economic sovereignty.

“Collectively, it is ours pure and simple. It must stay that way,” he says.

“Secondly, Radio New Zealand exists in an increasingly commercial media marketplace, and it is more important than ever to have a voice that does not bend to the dollar, to ratings, to external forces.

“Every nation needs its own voice and we need to afford that voice our collective protection.

“Thirdly, and one that I feel particularly deeply about, is water. I do not intend to wait until it is on the asset sales agenda.

“I do not believe New Zealanders would ever, or should ever, accept a sell-off of the supply of the water, or any of the aspects around it.

“Let no one claim for any price what is ours as of right. There needs to be a blanket and clear undertaking that this will never be on the agenda,” Mr Dunne says.

He also says there needs to be a proper debate on the issue of asset-sales that is more than just “National saying yes and Labour saying no”.

“We need a conversation that is more detailed and drills down into what New Zealanders really think are acceptable bottom lines,” he says.

“New Zealanders, I believe, are not definitively pro-asset sales, but under certain conditions, it is no longer the bogeyman issue that Labour would have you believe.”

Good on you peter Dunn for saying it like it is. Radio NZ is crucial as it is and Kiwi Bank is as well, Short term gain for long term loss, we would then have, ANZ aussie, ASB- Hong Kong, National Bank - AUssie, Westpac- Aussie, BNZ - Aussie - Hmmm. Why do we need to make a $ on everything how about having some proud national institutions that aren't solely focusing on $ and dollars for rich old men who don't need any more, John Key doing a good job steering the ship but asset sales are not what we want. If he drops the asset sales he'll have my vote, and i imagine a lot of other labour supporters as well. I dont want this country to become a carbon copy of aussie, usa. Where everything revolves around money profit and material wealth, i the $ rules with no though of the human effects. NewZealand is great because we mix both worlds we all want a bit of money and comfort but not at the expense of our moderate way of life, do we alll want brand new BMW,s 8 room house,s 80 inch tv's. or would we rathr have a country we can be proud of. Not a socialist but not a money hungry conservative either.

Sell em I say. Government isn't there to own a bank, run radio stations or own water companies. Govt is there to make sure we have police, an army and schools. Why should we be so obsessed with Govt owning something that is already run well by private interests?

Yeah Right!!! Why do we believe you? Peter Dunne has always been about Peter Dunne. Time you ship out of parliament and give some one else with fresh ideas a chance to make a change.

Let's see, nearly three years of supporting everything that National does uncritically - now a few days of criticising National's policies. United Future are a conservative right-wing party with no principles, don't trust them.

How about United Future have some principles for a change and not support any government that would sell our assets, not just not support the move.
Too little too late I'm afraid. United Future is reeking of desperation lately and I doubt Mr Dunne will win his seat this time around as people are sick of his bad temper, copying of other policies at the last minute and how he will flip flop to any party for power.

He is too a one man band! United Future don't even register on opinion polls any more. He may as well become an independent, he may gain more support that way!! I don't know what they even stand for these days. At least with Act and Mana you know where they stand. John Key controls United Future, he could VERY easily pull the pin on the party if he wants.

UnitedFuture is not "a one man band". Ignoring us does not mean we don't exist. I'm putting my heart and soul into initiating decent representation for Dunedin North (and many others are doing likewise elsewhere), and I believe a significant presence of a stable sensible party is essential in the current political party chaos. Peter Dunne is obviously important, but there is far more to the party than him.
