The nervous wait is for over thousands of students who sat NCEA last year, with the results available online from today.

And for those in Christchurch that meant it was time to find out just how much the earthquakes affected their grades.

Eighteen-year-old Sarah Small was one of thousands of Canterbury students whose school asked for the earthquake to be taken into account when her grades were assessed.

“It was pretty rough considering I lost my house as well as having all that time off school. So I had it hard at home and didn’t have school to escape to, to get my mind off things,” says the Year 13 student.

Earthquake Impaired Derived Grades were an initiative introduced last year by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

The authority says that with many schools being closed on a number of occasions after major shakes, as well as six schools sharing sites, there needed to be a way to ensure Canterbury students were not disadvantaged because of their circumstances.

“Students both sat their exams and the schools submitted marks based on their work during the year and the students were eligible for the better of their marks,” says NZQA CEO, Dr Karen Poutasj.

In total over 12,500 students across Canterbury schools applied to have ‘earthquake disruption’ taken into consideration when mark was finalised and early indications show that Christchurch students did well.
