A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has been felt across the lower half of the North Island, and the upper South Island.

The quake was centred out to sea at a depth of 230 km, according to GeoNet.

It was located 60km south of Opunake on the Taranaki coast, and 170km northwest of Wellington.

It struck at 10:36pm, and there have been no reports of serious damage or injury so far.

Reports suggest the quake was felt as far south as Christchurch and as far north as Te Kuiti in Waikato.

The quake has not created a tsunami threat, according to the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office.

I was fast a sleep and woke up to thinking i was a on boat but was so sleepy and it was so long it rocked me back to sleep kinda like i was dreaming. Shocked to hear it lasted up to 45 seconds! I swear thats the longest quake ive been through in my life we only get 5 to 10 second quakes MAX here in Hastings area. I think its safe to say that the entire country felt this one what an amazing shake.

Opunake, South Taranaki 10.38pm approximately. The sofa started to feel like a rollercoaster and the building like a fairground Fun House, we just looked across the room at each other as we slowly realised it was a quake. It lasted some time as our single storey house slowly settled back on its foundation and our pictures and lights stoped swinging. This was our first experience of an earthquake, the adrenalen started to pump around ... just a little.
