By international regulations, whaling is down to a few percent of what it was in the last century. So even with some of the whales ending up on japanese dishes, there is no threat to the species. So this whole business seems to be not about protecting nature, but rather about some vigilante activists with loads of time and money on their hands, who want to have a good time breaking international law, endangering their lives, and the lives of others, just to impose on other people their views on what we should eat. No sympathies for that.

Bottom line - the Japanese break international law with every commercial sale of the meat which is taken for 'scientific' reasons...And even the scientific exemption itself is nothing more than a loophole in international law (as if 'science' demands 500+ whales per year to broaden japan's understanding of marine biology. lol). Commercial whaling is supposed to be banned, period. Enough of the hypocracy - If Japan has the right to hunt whales, regardless of the legal and ecological implications, the environmental movement have a right to interfere.

I'm not at all for the hunting of whales, not because they breed in the wild, separating them from other meats such as beef lamb and chicken, but because they are an endangered species. If the Japanese government started to target pandas and tigers I think there would be greater opposition to it. It is no different for whales, who need to be protected just like pandas and tigers and other endangered animals. Yet some people still can't see the difference, or they care little for the suffering of animals.
I hate to break it to you Annon, but the Japanese whale slaughter is not comparable at all to how the Eskimo hunt seals. The Eskimo hunt seals in very small numbers and mainly for their own use, the Japanese whaling industry on the other hand, is a multi billion dollar commercial venture born out of the greed of those stuffing their wallets with the blood soaked money that comes from killing whales.
The japanese do not have a right to slaughter whales in antartica, first its a whale sanctuary, second they are endangered or close to, whales were close to extinction in the early 1900s and are only starting to recover. no human has the right to take the life on an animal. but as for hunting deer and seals. seals are protected in nz and you will get in a lot of trouble for this, fines and maby jail. as for deer while they are nice to see they were introduced to nz and are auctually a feral which upsets the food chain in nz
