For those readers who think that Bethune is actually an effective eco-warrior I'd suggest that a look at the old environmentalist statement "Think globally and act locally" still has great value. Ego driven protestors like Bethune and Lucy Lawless have a personality driven need to grab a high profile theme and promote themselves as warriors in a noble cause. It is all the "look at me"syndrome such as the occupation of the Shell exploration ship which brought 100,000 emails to Shell HQ and zero effect on the outcome. Bethune may get to Western Africa and get sidelined or have his mates killed. Good outcome? Watch this space- all we can hope for is no news because nothing can come out of this except either profile for Bethune or a news report that someone's been hurt. The earlier posting that NZ's fisheries is in a mess is right on the mark. Our coastal environment is in serious need of a new and better style of management to bring back the habitat to something more sustainable. Forget flash and fashionable missions such as the Maui dolphin. They've had it and will go extinct no matter how much media cover they get. Lucy and Pete should get in behind their local communities and get more management back in the hands of locals. And I don't mean that ever more marine reserves should be set up because that is a poor response in comparison to developing proper marine management structures all around our coasts. Off shore is actually now less of a mess so the coastal area needs help from people like our two Ego warriors. Will they do it? Not likely because they won't get the media's attention like they desperately need.

What a complete and utter waste of time and money. I agree with one of the posters below in that this is just another attempt at staying relevant by going out of your way to risk lives and stay in the spotlight – for what? Glory? Is it the same kind of glory that you got when your precious Earthrace boat ran over a Guatemalan fishing boat and killed an innocent fishermen and injured others? Is it the same kind of Glory that you basked in when you foolishly ran out of gas while practicing dangerous maneuvers in the SO, which by the way, resulted in a collision that was lucky not to have gotten anyone killed? Was it that kind of glory?

Tell you what, Pete – why don’t you take some of the money you make from this show and help the family members of the fisherman that was killed when your boat ran over him in your attempt to set some kind of speed record? Do you think his family cheers for your “record” and your new antics? Do you ever think about him? I know they still do – too bad you don’t.

Pete - It's time to grow up - stop playing GIJoe and trying to pretend you're a bad-ass. You're not - the guys that are fishing illegally actually are, and the only things you will be racking up are causlties amongst your team, mate. I guess the Maui's Dolphin in New Zealand (only 55 remaining) isn't enough to warrant any action by you then? I guess it's ok to let it go extinct as long as you get your spotlight, eh? Maybe Paul Watson was right about you all along.

Some people need to wake up. NZ has one of the most unprotected coastlines on the world. Fisheries officers struggle to enforce fishing regulations. The poaching is OUT OF CONTROL. There is so much work Pete could be doing in NZ waters. But i guess it may not make good TV?? People (poachers) would probably laugh at him if he rocked up in Camo and told them to stop. And without a TV show Pete gets no attention and No $$$. Pete's No "Whale Warrior" he saved NO Whales. He only spent a few hours with the Japanese factory ship before getting run over causing the fleet to get away and resume Whaling. If anything Whales died because of Pete Bethune. How does this make anyone a "hero". People are so Delusional. Now give this person a gun?? Yer right .. and i would say...the majority of Pete Bethune's critics are Not armchair warriors at all.
