The New Zealand Educational Institute says full funding for Christchurch schools and early childhood centres must remain in place for next year.

There has been speculation that up to 300 teachers and support staff could lose their jobs as students and their families leave the city.

Institute President Ian Leckie says the Ministry of Education needs to let schools know what sort of funding cuts, if any, they are facing.

“The people of Christchurch, I think, expect there to be an announcement that gives them some security that the services needed for their schools next year can be preserved and they can feel confident that they are not going to have to be starting the year understaffed,” says Mr Leckie.

Mr Leckie says it is an uncertain time that does not need to be made worse by school closures and staff reductions.

Surly we are not going to keep paying teachers if they are not needed due to classes not being needed. In private business you cannot simply keep paying staff just because you want to?
