"Lion Man" Craig Busch smoked marijuana while handling lions at the Zion Wildlife Gardens where a handler was yesterday killed by a tiger, a park employee says.

Mr Busch is "categorically denying" the claim.

The park in Whangarei remains closed until further notice while investigations into the death of South African animal keeper Dalu Mncube continue.

Carpenter John Davis, who worked at the park for six years, told the Employment Relations Authority in Whangarei yesterday he would resign if Mr Busch was reinstated.

Mr Busch appealed to the authority to get his job back after he was sacked from the park run by his mother Patricia Busch late last year.

Mr Davis told the hearing Mr Busch had been sitting down with the lions when he last saw him smoking marijuana, the Northern Advocate reported.

He had not complained about the serious health and safety issue, because Mr Busch "was the management".

The park ran smoother after Mr Busch was dismissed, Mr Davis said.

A spokesman for Mr Busch said the Lion Man "categorically denied" using cannabis while handling lions and had given evidence to this effect during the hearing.

Mr Busch said the mauling was "a terrible personal blow".

Animal welfare and safety standards had slipped at the park since the breakdown of his relationship with his mother, he said during the employment hearing.

Mr Mncube, the park's most experienced big-cat keeper, was killed yesterday, when a tiger tore into his abdomen and lower leg, while two keepers were cleaning the tiger enclosure.

A message on the park's website says staff are focusing on supporting his family and would be organising counselling for all employees.

"We ask for your consideration at this difficult time and request you to please respect the privacy of those involved.

"This dreadful event is being investigated by the authorities and we will be cooperating fully with the investigations.

"Due to the investigations we are unable to comment further and the park will be closed until further notice."

Department of Labour spokesman Eric Janse van Rensburg said the park had not been closed down.

"The department has the ability to stop unsafe work practices or machinery where there is imminent danger of serious harm," he told NZPA.

He refused to comment further about the department's involvement while the investigation continued.

Northland police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said that despite the best efforts of the other keeper, the tiger would not let go, and Mr Mncube died at the scene before an ambulance arrived.

Staff shot the tiger, Abu, to recover Mr Mncube's body.

Eight foreign tourists on a tour of the park witnessed the attack.

Mr Mncube had rescued a colleague from the jaws of the same 260kg tiger in February.

In that attack, he plunged his fingers into the gap between the tiger's 7.5cm-long teeth, before using a fire extinguisher to force the animal to release his Australian colleague, Demetri Price.

Mr Mncube said at the time of the February attack, it was over before he knew it, though Mr Price suffered four bites.

Mr Mncube's friend and colleague, Glen Holland, described him as "larger than life".

"People enjoyed being with him, people enjoyed being around him, he had an incredible ability with the cats."

Mr Mncube was the "best that we've seen at the park", Mr Holland said.

"Dalu was really the heartbeat of the whole lot - keeping everybody together."

being hands on is with big cats is fine if you know what you are doing and how to do it right craig busch did not know how to do it right. he did smoke drugs while handling cats, he did lots of bad things to the cats and is a bad man. Dalu was an amazing cat handler maybe if craig hadnt have raised and treated those cats the way he did dalu mite still have been alive. Craig was no cat lover he did not care for them. all he wanted was the fame he is an entertainer not a cat lover or big cat handler. Zion Wildlife Gardens is still running thanks to pat busch without her the cats would not be fed, without her there would be no ZWGs.

So What!!! wouldn't believe a word of it. Sounds to me like mommy & the carpenter got their heads together and spun a convenient yarn. As the owner of 2 domesticated cats I Know they will not be made do anything. Craig has a gift but more than this He is kind and fully absorbed with their health and all welfare. The cats adore him and this is earned and not beaten into them unlike Circus etc hideous enclosures. Fight for the Lion Man He's the Greatest.

I spent the whole day watching the lion man on T.V, and certainley do no believe that Craig Busch could do such a thing. It's pretty obvious that his life, passion is the Cats so cut him some slack and back off!

People can believe what they want to, but I believe that he is innocent and Zion Wild Life Gardens only belong to him and his cats. Good Luck Craig I hope you win the battle.

Very, very sad situation. Only recently realised Dalu had died and so did some research to find out what had been going on. Not surprised things went downhill if Craig not around. His mother should be ashamed of herself. He should be reinstated as soon as possible and if that doesn't happen, he should go see Ed Hearn in South Africa and put all of his efforts into conserving wildlife in their natural environment.

I have only reacently heard of the death of Dalu and both my mama and I are deeply saddened and send our thoughts to Dalu's family. On the other incident of Mr Craig Busch being sacked I find it totally disgusting that he is being accused of this complete and utter crap and strongly urge people to stand behind Craig and get him back in charge as nothing like this happened when he was running the park. And his mother should start appreciating the fact that HER SON is and will always be THE LION MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets all remember that Craig and Dalu were conserving our wildlife, educating man who are ignorant and continue to destroy this planet. Dalu put his life and soul into caring for the cats as did craig. They should be commended for the respect they offered the cats in trying to conserve each species. Anyone who thinks that these men would intentionally cage a big cat is disallusioned, they did so to save animals from extinction. All animals should be free to roam in their natural habitats. Man is cause of this destruction, we all play an equal part. The only ones to suffer are the cats and unfortunately those on the front line who love and respect them.

Having watched "Lion Man" on UK TV,I was sorry to hear of the death of Dalu who was obviously well loved by the staff and animals at the Gardens. I was equally sad to hear of Craigs departure from the Gardens. It is so sad when money comes families (I am guessing that's the problem)
I hope both he and his Mum can patch up their differences.
