Mr English said Labour's plans were an "old-fashioned recipe of borrow and hope, tax and spend" (NZPA file)

Finance Minister Bill English says New Zealanders should be worried after Labour leader Phil Goff said he would look at raising tax thresholds if his party won the next election.

Mr Goff said yesterday Labour would reverse any changes made to the 38 cent tax rate, which looks likely to be lowered in next month's budget, and the threshold would be higher than the current $70,000.

He said Labour would look at raising the threshold for those on low and middle incomes to avoid them being lifted up a tax bracket when their pay increases, The Dominion Post reported.

Mr English said Labour's plans were an "old-fashioned recipe of borrow and hope, tax and spend".

"Labour does not seem to recognise that the world has changed. The large budget deficits and ever-increasing debt being promoted by Phil Goff and his finance spokesman are reckless and irresponsible."

The Budget would underline the National Government's credentials as a "responsible manager of worker and business taxes with a growth plan and a tax system that better rewards hard work and enterprise", Mr English said.

Wills your a jerk! most people on welfare have no other option. Allot of people that work can't afford to buy a house. What's this rubbish about rewarding hard-working people!!! That's like saying people on low-middle incomes are not, so it makes it a very discriminative remark on his behalf. Be interesting to see the crime rates go up with the increase to GST and the raise of unemployment due to funding cuts and axing of public servant jobs. Are they try make the general public desperate so we all sing to the tune of "Mine, Mine, Mine cut, cut, cut". How about putting the money where people need it the most.

Joseph at your age why are you loosing so much to HNZ, you should be feet up retired in your freehold home, after a lifetimes work and paying off your home, or are you one of lifes bludgers, who think the state owes you a living a life and a free home, lets face it, all humans are born equal, and all have equal chances and oportunities at everything in life, have a think about your 65 to 90 yrs and work out what you did wrong, but don't complain about it.
P/S.... the GST increase is basically to fund the next lot of wefare dependant no hopers.

Cheers.

"...a tax system that better rewards hard work and enterprise." A clever way of describing the better-off, like Mr. English himself. More tax breaks for the wealthy just excentuates the inequalities in our society.

Countries that have a left-leaning, social democratic govt all have better healthcare, higher standards of living, less crime and a happier people than those suffering under right wing govts. It's a simple fact. Read 'The Spirit Level', an excellent book on the topic.

Thats the problem with socialism per se. and socialism as promoted by Labour - it does not incentivise people to do well, it pomotes mediocrity and amotivates people. We should rewared hard work and success instead of penalising it. The best expample of this philosophy was with Michael Cullen when he referred to successful people as 'rich pricks'. The Left hate success, individualism and self promotion. The joke is however is that the socialists are little capitalists themselves by virtue of the poitical job there are in and the baubles of office. Hypocrisy at its worst.

Ricardo you seriously need to find a defintiion of socialism pal.

Labours Socialist policies... what as opposed to Nationals Socialist policies?

LOL.

Will be interesting to see how responsible English is.. we know that Key has lied about fair compensation for the increase in GST.. pensioners like myself will lose part of our increase to housing NZ.. they will take about 25 percent of what we get... leaving us with an overall increase of around 1.9%.

Lets see how well the others do... minimum wage earners.. single middle income people etc.

I love how he says the world has changed without any irony, as if it wasn't hard right economics that made the world change for the worse in the first place.
