In New Zealand, if we talk about winners it is usually referring to sport. But as Jessie Casson has found, champions are found in all walks of life.
For 100 days she travelled the country photographing and interviewing 43 Kiwi winners as part of a coffee table book, ranging from champion vegetable growers, to oyster shuckers, with even a couple of sportspeople thrown in.
She is even using real film, with the last roll being used on 2006 Queen of the Universe Te Herekiekie Herewini.
"They had to be winners, they had to have won competitions," Jessie Casson explained. "I wanted people who were passionate about what they did, so people who had won competitions again and again."
Initially Ms Casson was going to photograph local heroes, but the publishing company wanted more of a focus.
On the December 22, Jessie, her husband Matt and their son Dylan set off on a 100 day trip in an old caravan, to showcase a diverse range of people from around the country.
"The whole focus was setting up camp," Ms Casson said. "I'd go off and do a shoot, Matt would look after Dylan and we'd pack up the next morning and head off. I'd be making phone calls, organising shoots, going to see galleries. It wasn't a jaunt, but it was a wonderful time."
"I became a house husband," Matt Casson laughs. "In a very confined space I became very proud about the caravan. I suppose eight hours in a caravan with a toddler and you need things to be tidy."
Jessie Casson is now busy getting the book ready for publication in October, while memories of their journey linger on, with the caravan still parked on the road outside of their home.
