A report has been released outlining how money raised during the Big Night In Telethon will be used.

The report, which was commissioned by the KidsCan Charitable Trust and prepared by Trust Investments, shows that KidsCan StandTall will receive $1,648,075 of the $2,061,439 raised.

The remainder of the funds went to staff wages, lighting, sound and other production costs.

The trust's Executive Director Julie Helson says the financial report shows the August event cost $1,573,255 to stage. $1,159,891 of this cost was funded by corporate sponsorship.

“These figures correct the inaccuracies circulating just after the Big Night In Telethon that only 18 cents in the dollar would go from funds raised to the KidsCan StandTall programmes. We are pleased to be able to emphatically address that concern and report that 80 cents in every dollar raised will go directly to our programmes,” she said.

Ms Helson says KidsCan StandTall has expanded its programmes since the Big Night In Telethon.

“We have been able to increase our food programme from supporting 8,500 kids a week to 17,000 kids a week… We’ll be giving away 20,000 raincoats, about 7,000 pairs of shoes, 14,000 pairs of socks and we’re also starting a new programme called Warm Kids which is targeting kids in colder areas of New Zealand.”

@DaveD If you research the annual reports for the charity you will find they haven't brought into the books the value of all of the items received for free, and then forwarded to children in need. For instance, shoes, raincoats, food etc - where there was no financial transaction taking place, the transaction was omitted from the financial accounts. I don't believe they will make the same mistake next time. There was a later story in the media about this, but it didn't get the same publicity as the original stories regarding their financial accounts. Now they have to spend more on administration putting a value on everything received for free....shame. Worthy cause though - poverty in NZ is real and it is the children who often suffer. Good on KidsCan.

I agree with you, if you read the article they got corporate sponsorship BEFORE the event to cover a good portion of running costs for the telethon. No sponsorship no telethon, no telethon, no 1.6 mill for needy kids. Great result I say and a very worth while charity.

Whoever the previous comment is from should be ashamed there has to be costs whenever you raise funds. Get real and get on board.
Great charity and great result.

Is $1.6m cheap or expensive for the scale of production? Spending 1.6m to raise 1.6m - is that economical? Cynicism aside, it was pretty good telly. So thats the telethon funds explained, but what about last years charity report which showed only a tiny amount of money donated to KC actually gets spent on the shoes/raincoats etc?

80 cents in every dollar is very well done!!! Good to see prudent financial management of funds raised. I bet Telethons of old did not have such a great return. Go KidsCan!! Go TV3!! Go the kids!!! I watched Sunrise this morning and I like the fact that KidsCan plans to do the Big Night In again to help more kids and that they will also share the love with another charity who needs assistance.
