American metallers Dream Theater played at the Civic in Auckland last night.

Many have called the five-piece group self-indulgent because of their at times 15-minute long epics, while fans thrive on the extreme technical prowess they display.

Nightline’s David Farrier caught up with founding member Mike Portnoy to get his take on the criticism and the fans.

Dream Theater are THE most amazing band in the world. Yeah, you may not be able to digest their music with one listen, but the tunes are so varied that there's always something in it for everyone. I walked past a couple of guys prior to the concert who made comment about our DT T-shirts "Oh its another thrash band..". Rubbish! DT are progressive metal. Progressive means it changes - you can never become bored of it. I've loved DT since I lived in the UK some 17 years ago. I own every single album and regularly get together with a fellow DT fan to sing along, have a few beers and a curry. Its always an awesome night. We went along to meet them after the show and they are just awesome. Talk about real people. Its just a shame that kiwis are ignorant of this type of music and are practically forced and brainwashed by music retailers and radio stations into listening to the same music that you here everywhere such as "Why does love do this to me?", "Slice of Heaven", "Don't speak" and the likes. Even in the pop charts today, there is so much amazing music to be heard. I felt proud to walk around the streets of Auckland with my mate broadcasting a DT T-shirt. I only hope they come back again sometime soon as I will be getting on plane from Wellington to Auckland once again without question. This is a small price to pay when the kiwi fans flew to Australia to see them last year. DT are the perfect example of what progressive metal is all about, and, as the population of NZ will never realise - there is so much more progressive rock and metal out there to be heard. You don't need long hair and black attire to appreciate this music.. only an open ear, patience and soul.

I saw Dream Theater at the civic on tuesday night. The show was brilliant as expected by possibly the worlds most talented band. I have most of their albums and afew of their DVD's, all of my friends don't even feel bothered listening to them. These days the mainstream songs are short, dull, boring and have no lyrical depth. Most people can't focus or comprehend or even appreciate incredible musician talent. At the show I was pleased to see all the audience chanting the lyrics and praising the talent in many gestures. I am glad to be amoung many fans around the world who trully admire REAL music. Forever a Dream Theater fan.
