Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the Game3 Game of the Year

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the Game3 Game of the Year

The biggest entertainment release this year wasn't the new Twilight movie, or Susan Boyle's debut CD, but a videogame.

So what was the best game this year? It's a hard call to make but David Farrier, the Game3 team and some of their friends have decided it's time for a countdown.

David Farrier - Game3
1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Strictly an R18 affair, developers Infinity Ward have crafted one of the most intense games ever which also contained the most controversial scene - putting the player into the shoes of a terrorist at an airport. But there's a reason five million copies sold in the first 24 hours and it had the biggest opening weekend of any entertainment release ever - it really is the best game of the year.

2) Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Uncharted 2
was one of the most fluid and exciting games this year and the closest experience yet to actually being inside an action movie. Universally it had ratings of 9.6 out of 10, which is pretty close to perfection.

3) Batman: Arkham Asylum
The reason this game is so great is the fact that it has nothing to do with a movie tie-in and everything to do with the universe created by DC Comics. If you don't believe me, it ended up in the Guiness Book of Records for 'Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever'.

4) Assassins Creed 2
The seemingly endless world created in this game is addictive and time consuming - most players agree it fixes all the problems that existed in the first game.

5) The Beatles: Rock Band
Despite the likes of DJ Hero and Guitar Hero: Metallica all making stellar efforts, no music game could stand in the way of the Beatles. The biggest band therefore made the biggest music game of the year - the graphics, gameplay and songlist all forming a winning combination.

The rest of the Game3 team and some of their friends from around New Zealand have submitted their top five lists which are below. Please note these lists are in no particular order.

lol i don't think COD MW2 is "strictly R18" if a 13 year old in my class at highschool gets his dad to buy it on the day it came out in new zealand. btw nintendo sucks. it has crap gameplay and worse graphics. James: just becos you were playing with camper noobs, doen't mean everyone camps, or the game sucks. Brad: yes. so you finished single player in 5 hours. WOW. not. try the other modes.

LOL Brad you 'finished' this game in 5 hours. That means 100% on spec ops, single player and multiplayer? Didn't realise that was possible...

@Brad, Your looking at only one aspect of the game which is its single player mode, had you bothered to go online or try anything else out? The online multiplayer play is in huge part of what made MW so famous, it holds many characteristics that are specific to COD and are just down right awesome. You have to move away from the narrow-minded single player approach and realise that the biggest games of today are ones in which multiplayer is a central theme among many games. As for the Single player mode, almost everything has been done and no doubt everyones gonna get bored of the same war-themed game, i for one think the single player was freaking awesome, try playing it on the hardest difficulty then tell me how long it took you to clock it.

@Blair - suggesting we get 'paid' by Wii's competitors (presumably Sony & Microsoft) is a very misguided and naive thing to suggest. Wii games didn't make many of these lists because their games did not meet the high standards the others set. Aaron's list does include a Wii title if you bothered to read it. Obviously, the above is only the opinions of the critics who submitted lists, and they're just guys who have opinions on games like anyone else. But out of interest, what Nintendo games do you think were the best of the year? @James - thanks for the feedback. Again, this is just our opinions, and mine (and Farrier's) is that MW2 is the best game of the year. It's great you have a different opinion and 'many critics' also do, thanks. @Charlie - can't speak for the others, but L4D2 is extremely good, but didn't effect me as strongly as the other games did. It's a great bit of fun with a few of your mates, for sure, but for me not as mindbogglingly awesome as the 5 games I listed are.

Blair, it's because Nintendo games are terrible.
It's really just novelty.
It's not the NZ gaming community it's the Nintendo community that fails.

Blair - It's hard to pick a Nintendo game that really stands out. Scribblenauts.... maybe? What would you suggest?

LOL, MW2 is a noob campfest online, doesn't deserve GOTY, many critics haven't even nominated it for GOTY.

Wow, is Nintendo not included, or just dont get payed by them? This is why NZ gaming community fails.
