A review into Environment Canterbury has concluded to replace the council with a commissioner

It looks likely that Environment Canterbury's council will be replaced by a commissioner following a damning report on its performance.

The review found Environment Canterbury’s handling of water and resource consent issues is lacking and it's relationships with other local authorities are not on good terms.

The report recommended that the council be replaced by a commissioner, and chairman Lawrence Yule says it's a radical step that could realistically happen.

Mr Yule says Environment Canterbury’s recent change in leadership is too little too late to put right the problems the report outlined.

The President of Local Government New Zealand says Environment Canterbury's change in leadership and effort to better itself is too little, too late.

A scathing report has criticised the regional council's performance, despite improvements in the last few months since Alec Neill was made chairman.

Sir Kerry Burke was ousted from the position last September.

The review came about after 10 mayors from the Canterbury region wrote about their concerns to Local Government Minister Rodney Hide.
