The Rena grounded on the Astrolabe reef on Wednesday 5 October.

Since then hundreds of tonnes of oil has washed up on the Tauranga coastline, including popular Mt Maunganui and Papamoa Beach.

A growing number of birds and wildlife have been affected by the oil, with many dying.

The Rena's captain has been arrested and appeared in Tauranga District Court this morning, charged with offences under section 65 of the maritime act.
