New Zealand's top tennis player Marina Erakovic is out of the women's doubles at Wimbledon after she and Thai partner Tamarine Tanasugarn were downed in three sets by the tournament's fifth seeds.

The Russian pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina won the third round match 6-3 2-6 7-5.

The match, spread over two days, resumed on Tuesday night (NZT) with the Russians winning five games in a row to take the first set and the first game of the second set.

Erakovic and Tanasugarn, who made the semi-finals last year, levelled the set at 1-1 before a rain interruption but returned to square the match.

There were two service breaks in the final set before the match was decided by a late break of serve.

Erakovic, who lost in the second round of the singles competition, now heads to the United States for two tournaments before returning to London for the Olympics.
