The family members of those lost in the Erebus air crash tragedy, who today travelled to Antarctica for a remembrance service, have been forced to return early due to bad weather.

The 104 families left Antarctica about two hours early after spending four hours on the ice holding a memorial service led by the Dean of Christchurch, Peter Beck, and seeing Scott Base.

The group left Antarctica on the Royal New Zealand Air Force Boeing 757 around 6pm and were expected to arrive back in Christchurch between 1030pm and 11pm.

On November 28 1979, Air New Zealand Flight 901 was on an Antarctica sightseeing tour when it crashed into Mount Erebus, killing all 257 people on board.

Just glad they've made the journey and they are on the way home - my Dad is on the flight and it's very nerve racking for the family at home. Can't wait to pick him up from the airport tomorrow
