In New Zealand, fans keen to see if the rowers could clinch gold nervously gathered in lounges, sports bars and one very special retirement village in Upper Hutt, where Eric Murray Sr watched his grandson row the race of his career.
While words of encouragement were directed at televisions across the country, Eric Murray's grandfather watched the race silently amongst friends at the Summerset Retirement Village in Upper Hutt.
“I'm very, very proud,” he says. “They've done a marvellous job.”
Eric Murray Sr says nothing's ever certain in rowing – a sentiment reflected on the faces of other nervous fans in a sports bar in Auckland, until the pair blitzed the field and the fan erupted in excitement.
Devine intervention was called on for Mahe Drysdale as fans willed him first across the line.
Among the revellers was a Kiwi who won an Olympic canoeing gold in 1984.
“[It’s] just wonderful to see them realise their dreams and particularly for the pair who promised so much and had so much expectation on them, [it’s] just fantastic to see them win it and pull it off,” says gold medallist Grant Bramwell.
Exuberant Kiwis sang and danced the night away, celebrating the golden moments passionately.
