New Zealander Mitch Evans further extended his lead in the GP3 series with a gritty third place in the feature race at the Hungarian Grand Prix early on Sunday (NZT).
Evans led briefly from eventual winner Antonio Felix Da Costa (Carlin), then battled with mightily with Lotus GP's Daniel Apt - who started fifth on the grid - for the remainder of the 16-lap race on the 4.4km Hungaroring circuit.
The win extends Evans' overall lead after 11 races in the 16-race series to 19 points over Aaro Vainio (Finland), who finished fifth on Sunday. Evans has 136 points, Vainio lies second with 117, while Abt (94) and da Costa (85) are off the pace in third and fourth overall.
"I'm really happy with our speed," Evans said afterwards.
"I think we were one of the fastest cars out there even if the lap times didn't show this."
Da Costa dominated the front of the race, setting a new lap record of 1min 37.899sec in the process.
