Every death is tragic

Every death is tragic, even ones that could have been so easily prevented.

Scott Williams, a 35-year-old teacher from Hamilton had been living in London for nine years.

Last July, he travelled up to Brighton with his flatmate Robert Pinnager. The pair separated - Robert went off to see his parents who live nearby, and Scott caught up with his brother Tony who was over from New Zealand visiting his girlfriend.

Scott and Tony spent the day seeing the sights of Brighton - they played the penny machines at the arcade centre and went on rides at the Pier's amusement park. Tony told the inquest he hadn't seen his brother for four years and they'd enjoyed catching up.

Scott and his flatmate had planned to drive back to London that night, but just as they were leaving they decided on the spur of the moment to stay. Scott called his brother and planned to meet up with him later that evening.

In the meantime Scott went with his flatmate to the Black Lion Pub. They drank beer and had shots of Sambuca.

As the night went on a series of events meant that Scott was left out in Brighton by himself. Scott's brother called to say he was heading home as he was tired. Scott's flatmate got thrown out of the pub because he'd fallen asleep and took a taxi back to his parent's house, leaving Scott talking to a girl he'd met at the bar

At closing time he walked the girl and her sister to a nearby taxi rank. Scott asked if he could share a taxi with them but they were worried they didn't have enough money to get home and said no.

That was the last anyone heard or saw from Scott Williams, until his body was discovered at a rubbish depot on Monday morning.

According to the pathologist report, Scott died from a severe crush injury to the chest. Although nobody saw him do it, almost everyone now agrees that Scott must have climbed into a rubbish skip and fallen asleep. When that skip was emptied into the hopper of the rubbish truck, Scott was crushed to death.

On the Daily Mail website, readers of Scott's story are quick to judge the actions of someone they've never met.

"Sorry, its sad he died, but it was thanks to his own stupidity!!!," says Liz from London.

"It's a sad story and I wouldn't wish it on anybody, but at the end of the day he's only got himself to blame. He shouldn't have got into that state in the first place," says Maz from Kent.

But Scott's family say they aren't looking to blame anyone else for his death. At the inquest in Brighton this week they told me they had come simply to gain clarity.

But no matter how much they learn about the events leading up to his death, the big question will remain unanswered - why did Scott climb into that rubbish skip in the first place?

Thats a good question. I cannot imagine getting into a rubbish skip to sleep no matter how drunk I was. Its a horrible, sad tale and seems mean to comment that its due to "stupidity". Good idea not to leave your mates behind when you've all been drinking.
