The ex-chairman of the Otago District Health Board says the sentence handed down to fraudster Michael Swann is appropriate to his crimes.

Swann was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in prison today - the longest jail term ever imposed for a serious fraud case.

The 47-year old stole almost $17 million of DHB money over six years, using his position as the head of IT to file false invoices to himself.

Ex-chairman Richard Thompson, describes his crimes as despicable.

Swann's friend, 48-year-old Kerry Harford, was jailed for four years and three months for his part in the fraud.
