When Craig came out as gay to his Exclusive Brethren family, he was effectively banished from the community.

Once close to his family, now he doubts he will ever be able to talk to them again.

The Brethren abhor homosexuality; they believe it is contrary to the teachings of the Bible. So Craig was told to suppress his sexuality. He says he was even given a drug to curb his libido, though the Brethren deny they had anything to do with this.

60 Minutes reporter Sarah Hall investigates.

Well done Craig, you are brave to have gone on tv and exposed those brethren, like some have done before you. They are so narrominded, i know that there are morals but people should be accepted for who they are, NOT judged by other mere people, which they are. They are not above the rest of the world, although they think they are, sadly. I remember having to confess socalled sins when I was in that religion 26 yrs ago, and I am sure the "priests" got sexually excited asking me all manner of questions! :Good on them, they are either sick or just mere men like everyone else in the big wide world. Get over them all cuzzy, you have a new family waiting you out of there...I found that out eventually. Blood ties do not mean jack at the end of the day, cos if they knew the true meaning of love they wouldnt reject you or any of us who have left that church. Take care.......stay in touch Craig

Wen,
You obviously have no idea what it is like to walk even 2 meters in his shoes. He has lost everything - I know because I have been there, watched many others be there. I have over 50 first cousins, aunts, uncles, and my grandmother that I never got to say good-bye to in the exclusive brethren, to see who they married, to see their children. I found recently that the new generation does not know our part of the family even existed - we were so written out of the family. It is a hell that you have to experience to have the right to pass judgement on. Many young people getting that disconnected struggle and are filled with anger and grief. Being gay will actually make it harder for Craig, so cut him some slack. When you leave the exclusive brethren, you have no idea how to fit in with normal people, as you have been taught they are all evil. Most young people swing wildly for quite some time whilst trying to forge a new life and new identity for themselves - yes - a wnole new identity where you are now allowed to make choices involving career, where you live, how you live, etc. Good luck to you Craig. And again, you actually have a lot of relatives, many you won't know exist, you would love to meet you. You have the most recent family news we can tap into. By the way, you will meet some truly amazing people in the "world" that we were taught is so bad.

Is this the Bretheren's ham-fisted attempt at damage control?

Shane and Jason I lived in this neighbourhood I was one of many who experienced his agressive behaviour. TV is a front, he is someone totally different from the programme we all watched. Come on dont be so fooled by a one off TV programme, open your eyes. Im not a religious person at all and do not hold anything against those types of people, its their choice how they choose to live their lives not mine. My views he has gone to air due to the fact he has now lost his job etc and is he looking for sympathy? He stated he openly told family he was gay when he was 18 didnt he, well he is now 20years old and has only been banned for family and church life some months ago. If you believe everything you view on tv and have not experienced the lifestyle for yourself then you would know where we are coming from. We have all lived beside this boy for many a year.

Wen - Would I be right in assuming that you follow and do what the Brethren say, simply because you don't have a mind and voice of your own ? Totally clueless.

I have only lived in NZ for a short time and I am astonished that these people are living here. They are nothing but child abusing evil people, however did they ever appear in NZ? get rid of this cult before many many people are damaged for life.

Wen you clearly were not watching the same article as everyone else. The things you claim were not mentioned on TV at all. You obviously just have a predjudice against homosexual people....as I do against religuious freaks!

What a joke this GAY guy is!! He is nothing but destructive, to our neighbourhood abusing all neighbours with such obsene language I didnt realise the Brethrens could possibly speak. What an eye opener that was, he has no respect for his mother swearing at her and even going to the extent of spitting at people! His parents could not control him, the church has tryed over the years to help this guy but he has one focus on his mind and its a vicious manner to all except certain males obviously!

"Imagine that - growing up in a society that considers homosexuality to be immoral."

Yeah, imagine that. Is he being sarcastic or what?
