One man had been injured and parts of Queen St in central Auckland have been blocked off after an explosion in an elevator.

The explosion occurred when the lift was servicing the third floor of a building on the corner of Queen and Fort streets which houses a Westpac bank branch.

A fire service spokesperson confirmed there had been an explosion but couldn’t comment on the scale or the nature of it.

A man in his 30s is being treated at the scene, the fire service confirmed.

Building managers and the lift maintenance company have been notified and are understood to be making their way to the scene.

A number of fire engines and some other emergency services are also there.
