An explosion in a school boiler room has left three people injured - one of whom is critical.

Two of the injured are believed to be a groundsman and a boiler specialist.

Silverdale senior fire fighter Don McErlich says fire fighters were called to the scene at Orewa College, about 40km north of downtown Auckland at about 2.40pm.

St John Ambulance spokesman Murray Bannister said the person in a critical condition was due to be flown by Westpac rescue helicopter to Auckland City Hospital.

Another person who was seriously injured would be taken by road to Middlemore Hospital.

Volunteer fire fighter support officer Ted Fuller says the school’s boiler had been having problems last night. Students reported hearing a loud bang.

Firefighters had put out the fire, which was described as not major.

The school has been closed for the day and fire safety officers were expected at the scene to try to ascertain the cause.
