Explosions could be heard tonight as fire crews fought to contain a blaze in west Christchurch.

The fire started at around 8:30pm, when a truck battery short-circuited and was fuelled by flammable chemicals stored on site.

Staff at the freight company, which specialises in carting dangerous goods, were all evacuated quickly and there were no injuries.

The flames were brought under control soon after the Fire Service arrived, but the warehouse suffered extensive smoke damage.
