Sydney has welcomed the New Year with another spectacular fireworks display.

But Melbourne's fireworks display ended with far too much fire.

More than 100 people called emergency services as flames licked the Art's Centre's spire, but it wasn't enough to stop the partying.

In Brisbane they welcomed in a happier new year than last year, when floods hit the city.

But it was Sydney that stole the show. The city is renowned for spectacular fireworks and again it didn't disappoint.

One-and-a-half million people crowded the waterfront to watch the show with the theme 'Time to Dream'.

The clock struck midnight in Sydney two hours after it did in New Zealand, but that didn't stop the Aussies getting a bit ahead of themselves.

"We're the first city around the world to kick off new year and there are about a billion people who would have seen that stunning fireworks display at 9pm and then again at midnight," says Clover Moore, Sydney lord mayor.

The city had extended alcohol-free zones and it's believed that contributed to good behaviour – just 57 people were arrested, fewer than a typical Saturday night.
