Police have revealed the nationality of the mother and infant who died after falling from a high-rise apartment in Auckland last night.
The 36-year-old woman and her baby had arrived in the country from Mexico last month.
The pair fell from Auckland Harbour Oaks Hotel and Apartment facilities on Gore St around 5:20pm.
Police secured the scene in the swimming pool area of the complex while an investigation was carried out.
Residents told the New Zealand Herald the pair fell from the 26th storey of the 37-storey building, which is the tallest apartment tower in the country.
One resident said they saw a woman with a baby yelling into a mobile phone in the building's lobby shortly before the deaths.
"She wasn't speaking English ... She was just crazy, definitely distressed."
An ambulance spokeswoman said the pair were dead when emergency services arrived.
Support was being provided to ambulance staff due to the traumatic nature of the incident.
The woman’s husband, and father of the baby, has flown in to Auckland from elsewhere in New Zealand this morning. He is being supported by Auckland-based Mexican Consulate staff.
Police understand the family had come to New Zealand on business.
Post-mortem examinations are still in progress and formal identifications are not likely to be completed today.
Police do not believe anyone else was involved in the double tragedy.
