A Perth jury's verdict of murder in the killing of Scott Guy's cousin Andrew Marshall may not bring the closure his family were hoping for as they heard the verdict read.
Stefan Schmidt admitted he pushed Mr Marshall but says he never meant for him to fall through the Ocean Beach Hotel window.
The jury though didn't believe him, they said it was murder.
The Marshalls travelled to Perth from Hawke's bay for the eight-day trial. They broke down in tears as the verdict was delivered.
They told 3 News that listening to Schmidt give evidence was harrowing.
"I wanted to sit through as much as I can, I think at different times we all left,” says Alan Marshall, Mr Marshall’s father.
“You don't have to be a psychologist to know when someone's lying, hearing all the evidence, so that was hard to take."
It's been a tragic few years for the Marshalls - their nephew Scott Guy was murdered 10 months before their son.
“It's sort of extraordinary how it's happened, it could potentially blow families apart, but fortunately it's strengthened us.”
The Marshalls will travel back to New Zealand tonight. They're considering whether to come back for Schmidt’s sentencing in September.
