A milk price war has started in Auckland and it would be a good thing if it went nationwide, farmers say.

The price of milk became a political issue last year after consumer complaints that they were being ripped off and farmers have been defending themselves ever since.

They say it's retailers who ramp up prices and they're welcoming reports that boutique supermarket Nosh and a Pak n' Save supermarket in Hamilton, have brought prices down.

"There's a price war in one location at least and Federated Farmers hopes it's just the first step," dairy spokesman Willy Leferink said on Wednesday.

"It's happened in the UK and Australia so why not here?"

He's urging people to shop around, saying some dairies and petrol stations are selling milk a lot cheaper than supermarkets.

I'd like to see a food price war start and the best way to do that is to entice some big overseas super-market chains into the country and break-up the duopoly of Foodstuffs and Progressive driving people into poverty and starvation.
