With stacks of awards and a large and loyal following, the boys from Fat Freddy’s Drop could be forgiven for sticking to the tried and true.
But this summer they are cooking up something new, literally.
This new video reveals keyboardist Iain Gordon's trade secrets to his paua wontons.
Nightline wanted proof the wontons were the real deal, without realising that testing the boys also meant testing the reporter.
“Okay so we're going to teach you to make paua wontons,” instructs Gordon. “So first we've got to lay out your pastries.”
But it seems the fourth estate needed a helping hand.
“I'll do your ones Laura. Just for the first ones so you get it.”
Gordon says the one thing paua wontons and Fat Freddy’s music have in common is they are both “tasty”. He hopes Kiwis want more of their distinct sound, “otherwise we're wasting our time in the studio”.
That studio time is being used to make a new album which is set for release next year.
But before that they are finding out if their fans share their taste for shellfish.
“We'll probably take up just a quota from the boys, so we might do like forty for each show or something. So we can feed probably 100 people?”
Once the wontons were boiled it was time for the taste test.
Sceptics can try the paua wontons themselves at Fat Freddy's upcoming gigs in January.
