Police fear a Chinese PHD student may have drowned over the weekend at the Leigh Marine Reserve Faculty north of Auckland.

Thirty-year-old Yue Gui, known as Alice, was last seen at 11pm Saturday at the reserve, operated by Auckland University.

According to Alice’s normal schedule she was checking water temperature on Sunday morning.

Police fear she may have fallen in the water, as weather and tidal conditions were adverse over that period.

A search was carried out yesterday using a police helicopter.

The Wellington dive squad is arriving this morning to assist with the search.

Police are seeking information from any persons who may have seen Alice in the area around similar timeframes.

Any persons with information are requested to contact police.
